Xiangshan Forum shows China’s continued desire to ‘run things on their own terms’: Expert

China’s largest annual security conference, the Xiangshan Forum, kicked off on Thursday (Sep 18) in Beijing. Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun said in his opening speech that a stronger Chinese ...military will be a stronger force for peace, while pledging to uphold the post-war international order and reject military blocs. The forum is seen as a counterpart to other global security dialogues like the Shangri-La Dialogue held yearly in Singapore. Chong Ja Ian, associate professor of political science at the National University of Singapore and non-resident scholar at East Asia-based research centre Carnegie China, shares his insights with CNA’s Asia Now.

Bangladesh battles double outbreak of dengue and chikungunya as hospitals fill

Bangladesh is grappling with a severe outbreak of two mosquito-borne viruses, dengue and chikungunya, overwhelming hospitals and healthcare workers.
With over 33,000 dengue cases and 130 deaths recorded this year, ...
the situation has become critical, particularly for children who are among the most vulnerable.
The rapid spread of these viruses is attributed to a combination of factors, including climate change, unplanned urbanisation, and poor sanitation, which have created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Experts warn that without urgent action to destroy breeding sites and improve early detection, the outbreaks could worsen, further straining Bangladesh's already stretched healthcare system.

Al Jazeera's Tanvir Chowdhury reports from Dhaka, Bangladesh.
