France shooting: Protests erupt after 17-year-old shot dead by police during traffic stop

Elisabeth Borne, France

Protesters in France shot fireworks at police and set cars ablaze in the country’s suburbs for the second night on Wednesday, hours after President Emmanuel Macron deplored the “inexcusable” fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy during a Tuesday traffic stop.

The shooting of the teenager Nahel, who was of North African origin, has fuelled long-running complaints of police brutality in the ethnically diverse suburbs of France’s biggest cities.

“Today, there is shock, mourning, anger,” French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said, while calling for calm after overnight clashes. “The shocking images broadcast yesterday show an intervention that clearly does not seem to comply with the rules of engagement of our law enforcement officers.”

“It’s a bit of society’s misfortune, there are a lot of problems, and I think we’re all responsible,” supermarket employee Amadou Dagnoko said in Nanterre. “I can’t talk about what really happened. But it’s tragic, we’re still talking about human life.”
